Note from Drew Obermeyer: This is a great opportunity to join a progressive community college teaching staff here at Southeast Community College here in Beatrice Nebraska. We are a 13 teacher program with current ag program enrollment at about 200 students located on the Beatrice campus. We are unique in that we set on an 800 acre fully functional land lab half dedicated to no till row crop in a corn bean rotation and half in pasture and hay production for our beef, sheep, goat, swine and horse herds. The instructors work side by side using a mix of new and old technology and equipment. Currently we rent new John Deere equipment on a 2 year rotation including an S760, 8R and a 412R sprayer. This position is anticipated to teach Motorized AG, Basic Fertilizer Management, Grain Harvesting and Management, and Planting and Tillage. | Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Possess current knowledge of and experience in the Agriculture Management & Production field with a focus on Agronomy and Plant Science. This will include one or more of the following areas: Soils & Plant Nutrition, Ag Machinery Maintenance, Motorized Ag Equipment, Basic Fertilizer, Planting & Tillage, Grain Harvesting and Management, Advanced Crop Production and Management, Crops & Food Science, Pest Certification, Ag Chemicals & Equipment, Irrigation and Water Management, Forage Harvesting & Management, and Cooperative Experience. Ability to operate the tools and equipment used in the Agronomy/Plant Science Production setting. Ability to demonstrate all types of processes required of an Agronomy/Plant Science Manager for the particular courses assigned to teach. Ability to apply and demonstrate effective communication skills. Ability to develop and incorporate a variety of teaching strategies and techniques in the classroom/laboratory. Ability to devise and utilize appropriate evaluation methods for classroom/laboratory use. Possess a working knowledge of all manner of Agronomy/Plant Science industry processes, procedures, and experiences. Must also be familiar with and committed to exceeding standards regarding laws, regulations, and industry best practices relating to chemical, fertilizer, equipment, and job site safety and environmental protection. | |
| Minimum Qualifications | Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, or Agriculture Education, or a directly related field of study.* Two (2) years of recent experience in Agriculture, Agronomy, or Agriculture Education. Must currently hold, or obtain within 12 months of hire, commercial herbicide and insecticide applicator and chemigation certification. *Associate’s degree in an Agriculture or Agronomy related field, plus a total of four (4) years of professional work experience in the Agriculture or Agronomy industry, may be substituted for the degree/experience requirement. |

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Josey Schmidt will begin serving as the Kiowa County 4-H youth development extension agent, effective Sept 15. Kiowa County’s extension office is in Greensburg, Kansas.
Schmidt earned her bachelor’s degree in agribusiness from Kansas State University. She has most recently been employed as a CAS (client advisory services) accounting specialist for Adams Brown CPA and Strategic Allies in Hutchinson, Kansas.
4-H youth development agents develop and deliver educational programs for school-aged youth. This includes supporting community clubs, out-of-school programs, school enrichment, volunteer management, and outreach to create new program opportunities with new and existing community partners.
Local extension faculty are jointly employed in a partnership between K-State Extension, headquartered on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, and the local extension board.
The role of K-State Extension is to encourage the adoption of research-based information to improve the quality of life for Kansans. K-State Research and Extension is the short name for the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service.
