Job Summary:

The Agriculture Instructor/Program Coordinator is a full-time, 10-month position for Cowley College’s Career and Technical Education department.  This position is responsible for the oversight of the Agriculture program, recruit & manage Ag judging teams, and successfully teaching students within the program.

Position Duties:

  • Recruit students for the Agriculture program, clubs, and judging teams.
  • Assist in recruitment, hiring, and retaining talented and entrepreneurial full-time and adjunct faculty members, serving as Lead Instructor for Agriculture program.
  • Plan and supervise Agriculture programs relevant to the Cowley College mission, manage departmental budgetary and financial matters.
  • Creation of curriculum, instructional materials, and oversight of agriculture labs and equipment.
  • Serve as the advisor for department students.
  • Instruct students in competency-based program curriculum using current instructional strategies appropriate to the subject matter to assure highest quality classroom instruction.
  • Effectively manage the classroom to create an optimal learning environment, maintaining an appropriate balance of classroom discipline.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of student attendance, academic progress and grades as required by College policy and certification/regulatory agencies.
  • Work in partnership with high school and higher education institutions for the purpose of articulation and transfer of program courses, certificates, and degrees.
  • Develop and coordinate with program advisory boards, business, community, industry, and government partners.
  • Keep posted office hours and serve on college and relevant industry committees.
  • Maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with employees, vendors and/or any other representatives of external organization.
  • Comply with all College policies and procedures.

Required Education Background:

  • Master’s degree Agriculture, Agriculture science, Education with a specialization in Agriculture or other agricultural area in a discipline relevant to this position (e.g.: Animal Science, Agronomy, Plant Science, Soil Science, or other agriculture science).
  • Agriculture teaching experience preferred.
  • Agriculture judging team leadership experience preferred.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience teaching agriculture related courses in higher education.
  • Experience coaching agriculture related judging teams.
  • Experience working with high school and higher education institutions for the purpose of articulation and transfer of program courses, certificates, and degrees.
  • High School, CEP, Adult Education teaching experience.
  • Program Advisor experience.
  • Agriculture industry experience other than education.
  • Strong knowledge of professional clubs and organizations pertaining to agriculture (i.e.; FFA, 4-H, NACTA, National Coaches Association).
  • Knowledge of precision agriculture.
  • Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including co-enrolled high school students.

Agriculture Instructor – Southeast Community College (Beatrice, NE)

Note from Drew Obermeyer:  This is a great opportunity to join a progressive community college teaching staff here at Southeast Community College here in Beatrice Nebraska.  We are a 13 teacher program with current ag program enrollment at about 200 students located on the Beatrice campus.  We are unique in that we set on an 800 acre fully functional land lab half dedicated to no till row crop in a corn bean rotation and half in pasture and hay production for our beef, sheep, goat, swine and horse herds.  The instructors work side by side using a mix of new and old technology and equipment.  Currently we rent new John Deere equipment on a 2 year rotation including an S760, 8R and a 412R sprayer.   This position is anticipated to teach Motorized AG, Basic Fertilizer Management, Grain Harvesting and Management, and Planting and Tillage.  See the link below to the complete job description or feel free to contact Drew Obermeyer dobermeyer@southeast.edu or Travis Pralle tpralle@southeast.edu

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Possess current knowledge of and experience in the Agriculture Management & Production field with a focus on Agronomy and Plant Science. This will include one or more of the following areas: Soils & Plant Nutrition, Ag Machinery Maintenance, Motorized Ag Equipment, Basic Fertilizer, Planting & Tillage, Grain Harvesting and Management, Advanced Crop Production and Management, Crops & Food Science, Pest Certification, Ag Chemicals & Equipment, Irrigation and Water Management, Forage Harvesting & Management, and Cooperative Experience. Ability to operate the tools and equipment used in the Agronomy/Plant Science Production setting. Ability to demonstrate all types of processes required of an Agronomy/Plant Science Manager for the particular courses assigned to teach. Ability to apply and demonstrate effective communication skills. Ability to develop and incorporate a variety of teaching strategies and techniques in the classroom/laboratory. Ability to devise and utilize appropriate evaluation methods for classroom/laboratory use. Possess a working knowledge of all manner of Agronomy/Plant Science industry processes, procedures, and experiences. Must also be familiar with and committed to exceeding standards regarding laws, regulations, and industry best practices relating to chemical, fertilizer, equipment, and job site safety and environmental protection. 
Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, or Agriculture Education, or a directly related field of study.* Two (2) years of recent experience in Agriculture, Agronomy, or Agriculture Education. Must currently hold, or obtain within 12 months of hire, commercial herbicide and insecticide applicator and chemigation certification. *Associate’s degree in an Agriculture or Agronomy related field, plus a total of four (4) years of professional work experience in the Agriculture or Agronomy industry, may be substituted for the degree/experience requirement.

Job Description

Instruction (60%): The successful candidate will teach a variety of agricultural business, agricultural communication, agricultural education and agricultural leadership courses both on campus and online.

Scholarship (10%): The successful candidate is expected to develop a program of scholarly pursuit in his or her discipline area, preferably focused on topics of regional agricultural interest. 

Service (30%): The successful candidate is expected to participate in appropriate department, college, university, community, and professional service activities.

Minimum qualifications: A master’s degree in agriculture or closely related discipline. The candidate must have strong commitment to undergraduate education, possess strong communication skills, and be able to work well with students and department faculty and staff. 

Preferred qualifications: A teaching background at the college or university level and/or business experience in the agriculture industry is highly desirable. Education or experience in community related organizations such as 4H, FFA, extension outreach is preferred.
